The short answerStart with the leg opening. Narrow, tapered trousers can stop at the ankle with loafers or low sneakers; straight legs want a slight break with derbies or white sneakers; wide and flared legs should cover the shoe and need some sole height. Then let a T-shirt, knit or shirt set the formality.

Can you wear tailored trousers with sneakers?

Yes, and it is the fastest way to take tailored trousers beyond the office. What makes them work is the drape of the fabric and a clean crease, and neither disappears when you change shoes. What matters is whether the leg opening, the length and the weight of the shoe agree. A narrow opening over a chunky trainer looks like the shoe is bursting out of the leg; a wide leg over a thin sole swallows the foot. Clean, low-profile leather sneakers are the safest start, while loafers and derbies pull the same pair back towards formal.

Read the leg opening first, then choose the shoe.

How long should tailored trousers be? Leg opening, break and shoes

The "break" is the fold that forms where the hem meets the shoe. No break means the hem just touches or clears the shoe; a slight break leaves one soft fold at the front; a full break stacks on the shoe, with the back falling below the top of the heel. The general rule: the narrower the leg opening, the less break it can carry, because a narrow hem has nowhere to fall and simply bunches. Wider openings can drape over the shoe. Here is how ARVOpm's current trousers line up:

Cut ARVOpm style Leg opening (flat) Length Break Shoes
Pleated tapered Tapered Dark Grey 20.75–23 99–106 None, ankle showing Loafers, low sneakers
High-rise straight Black High-Waist Cuffed 22.2–23.8 103.5–108.5 Slight, or cuffed to ankle Loafers, derbies, white sneakers
Regular straight Light Grey Mélange 26–29.6 99–110 Slight Derbies, dress shoes, white sneakers
Flared Light Grey Striped Flared 27.5–30.5 104–114 Covers most of the shoe Heeled boots, chunky loafers
Wide straight Black Striped Wide Leg 32.9–36.1 101–110.5 Drapes over the shoe Thick-soled sneakers or derbies
Wide, floor-length Classic Black Trousers Not listed (knee 54.5–59.4 round) 100–114 Floor-length, needs sole height Thick-soled sneakers or derbies
Centimetres, measured flat, XS to XL. Length runs from waistband top to hem. Tolerances as stated on each product page.

To choose a size, measure a pair you like from the top of the waistband down the side seam and compare. Mind the rise: a high-waisted pair sits higher, so the same length reads shorter on the body. And always try trousers with the shoes you wear most; a sneaker and a loafer can change the break completely.

How to wear wide-leg trousers without looking sloppy

Wide trousers should look intended, not oversized. Three things decide it. The waist should sit cleanly, with the volume starting below the hip; the Classic Black Trousers, for example, have an elasticated back waist for comfort while the front reads as a flat tailored waistband. The fabric should swing as you walk rather than standing out like two tubes. And with a wide-straight opening of 32.9 cm or more, the shoe needs some sole.

On top, show the waist: tuck in, or at least front-tuck. If the top is oversized, choose a shorter one. For petite frames, wide trousers in the same colour as top and shoes can lengthen the line more than a slim leg does; for fuller thighs, a wide straight leg falls as one clean column.

T-shirt, knit or shirt on top?

T-shirt. Choose one with some weight and a collar that holds its shape, tuck it into tapered or high-waisted trousers and add white sneakers. Keep the hem above the bottom of the seat.

Knitwear. In Taiwan's autumn and winter, knit plus tailored trousers can be a daily uniform. A V-neck tennis sweater over a shirt with straight trousers and loafers is classic Modern Ivy; a wool-blend crew lets a collar and hem peek out; a fitted turtleneck tucked into high-waisted trousers takes a blazer straight into a meeting.

Shirts and polos. A regular-fit shirt tucked in with a belt is the safest commute; roll the sleeves and switch to sneakers to dress it down. Oversized shirts work untucked over wide trousers. For a lighter Tennis Core note, a long-sleeve striped polo with white straight trousers and brown loafers is made for an afternoon out. For collars and fabrics, see our white shirt guide.

Pleated or flat-front?

Pleats add fabric at the hip and thigh. Standing, they should lie closed and run into the crease; sitting, they open so the waistband does not dig in. That makes pleats natural partners for tapered and wide cuts. Flat fronts read cleaner and suit straight and slim legs. If you carry more at the hip or thigh, pleats let the fabric fall instead of pulling. ARVOpm's pleated tapered, high-waist cuffed and white straight trousers all have front pleats.

Pleats that splay open when you stand mean the waist or hip is too tight.

What to check when you try them on

FITTING CHECK1. Stand side-on: pleats closed, crease falling straight to the shoe.
2. Sit: no digging at the waist, no strain at the thigh, pockets lie flat.
3. Squat or step up: room at the seat and knee.
4. Walk: the hem lands where the table above suggests, and the back does not drag.
5. Switch to your everyday shoes and check again.

FAQ

What sneakers go with tailored trousers?

Start with clean, low-profile leather sneakers. Tapered trousers suit slim soles; wide and flared legs need some sole height so the hem has somewhere to fall.

Should tailored trousers cover the shoe?

It depends on the leg opening. Narrow openings look best with no or slight break; wide-straight and flared legs can drape over the shoe, as long as the back does not drag.

Do wide-leg trousers work for petite frames?

Yes. Tuck in to show the waist and keep top, trousers and shoes in one colour family. A hem that covers a shoe with some sole height lengthens the leg.

Do pleated trousers make you look bigger?

Not when they fit. Pleats should lie closed when you stand and let fabric fall over the hip and thigh. If they splay open, the waist or hip is too tight.

How do I care for tailored trousers?

Hang them upside down by the hem so the fabric's weight releases creases, and steam out wrinkles. Wash according to the care label.
