The short answerAn oversized blazer only shortens you when three proportions slip: the shoulder seam sits somewhere the design never intended, the hem lands mid-thigh, and the trousers pile up on the shoe. Get those right, keep the lower half clean and raise the waistline, and volume works for any height.

Why do oversized blazers make you look shorter?

Most people who give up on an oversized blazer say the same thing: it made them look shorter. The cut is rarely the culprit. Usually three proportions fail at once. The hem stops mid-thigh and cuts the leg in two. The shoulders are wide but unstructured, turning the torso into a box. And the trousers are too long, collapsing into folds on top of the shoe.

Fix each of those and the oversized blazer becomes a flattering tool: a broad shoulder line narrows the waist and hips, a fluid front panel draws a vertical line, and clean trousers carry that line down to the shoe. Below, we work through it using the actual flat measurements from ARVOpm blazers currently in stock.

Oversized is not a bigger size. It is a different distribution of proportion.

Wide shoulder vs dropped shoulder: what to measure

There are two ways to make a blazer "wide". A structured wide shoulder keeps the seam at or just beyond your shoulder point and builds width with fabric body. A dropped shoulder deliberately moves the seam onto the upper arm so the line falls away softly. The size charts show how different they are:

Blazer Shoulder Shoulder, all sizes Shoulder (M) Chest (M) Length (M)
Dark Grey Relaxed Blazer Dropped 51.5–55.7 (XS–L) 54.5 58 75
Wide Shoulder Double-Breasted Khaki Dropped 49.5–53.7 (XS–L) 52.5 56 77.5
26SS relaxed blazers Wide, structured 45–50.4 (XS–XL) 48 56 74
Classic Two-Button Blazer Natural, slightly wide 45–50.4 (XS–XL) 48 56 75–75.5
Centimetres, garment measured flat. The 26SS group covers the light grey pinstripe, brown-green pinstripe, grey mélange peak-lapel and blue plaid peak-lapel blazers. Tolerances as stated on each product page.

In size M, the dropped-shoulder dark grey blazer measures 6.5 cm wider across the shoulder than the 26SS relaxed cut. That is not a sizing error; it is the designed drop. So when trying a dropped shoulder, ignore where the seam sits and check three things instead: the collar hugs the back of the neck, the chest lies flat when buttoned, and the upper arm shows no horizontal folds when your arms hang.

For a structured wide shoulder, the opposite applies: the seam should sit on the shoulder point or roughly a finger's width beyond it. Any further and the shoulder collapses into a dent above the arm. The easiest reference is a jacket you already like. Lay it flat, measure seam to seam and compare. For a wide-shoulder blazer, match it or go slightly wider; for a dropped shoulder, compare chest width instead.

How long should an oversized blazer be?

A long-standing tailoring rule puts jacket length at roughly half the distance from the base of the collar to the floor. A quicker check: with arms relaxed, the hem should reach about where your fingers curl and fully cover the seat. Oversized cuts can run a little longer, but avoid a hem that lands mid-thigh.

Lengths vary by several centimetres within the same size. In XS, the 26SS relaxed blazers measure 70.3 cm, the dark grey dropped shoulder 71.25 cm and the double-breasted khaki 75 cm. If you are petite, pick the shorter style rather than sizing up for shoulder width. If you are tall, the longer double-breasted cut gives a cleaner vertical line.

Do not compare sleeve numbers directly either. A dropped shoulder starts the sleeve lower, so add half the shoulder width to the sleeve length for a rough centre-back-to-cuff figure. In size M, that gives about 90.75 cm for the dark grey dropped shoulder, 87.5 cm for the 26SS relaxed cut and 88 cm for the Classic Two-Button. Push the longest sleeve up to show the wrist. Double-breasted styles look best fastened, since open front panels flare out and add width.

Which trousers and shoes go with an oversized blazer?

Once the top widens, the trousers bring the line back. The leg needs enough width to answer the jacket, or you end up top-heavy. The length should meet the shoe with a slight break, not a stack of folds. And a higher waist always lengthens the leg.

Trousers Cut Leg opening (flat) Length Shoes
Tapered Dark Grey Pleated, tapered 20.75–23 99–106 Loafers, derbies; show some sock
Classic Black Trousers Wide, floor-length Not listed (knee 54.5–59.4 round) 100–114 Thicker-soled derbies or sneakers
Light Grey Striped Flared Flared below knee 27.5–30.5 104–114 Heeled boots, loafers
Black High-Waist Cuffed Straight High-rise straight 22.2–23.8 103.5–108.5 Loafers, low sneakers
Centimetres, measured flat, XS to XL. Length runs from waistband top to hem.

The Classic Black Trousers have a front rise of 32.5–34.6 cm, so the waistband sits high and the waistline does not sink under a long jacket, but the floor-length leg needs some sole height. The pleated tapered pair works the other way: room at the hip, narrowing towards an ankle-length hem that lightens the lower half. Keep shoes, socks and trousers in one colour family for the longest line. For the full length-to-shoe chart, see our tailored trousers guide.

Choosing by frame: petite, tall, broad

Petite: choose length before shoulder width. The XS lengths of the 26SS relaxed and dark grey dropped-shoulder blazers sit around 70–71 cm. Add high-waist straight trousers, tuck the top layer in, and wear a turtleneck in the trouser colour for an unbroken column. Tall and slim: dropped shoulders and double-breasted cuts are yours; pair them with wide or flared trousers and a substantial sole. Broad shoulders or back: pick a structured wide shoulder over an extreme drop, and make sure the buttoned front shows no X-shaped pull. Deep grey, navy and brown help. Fuller bust or hips: single-breasted styles with a deeper opening and fluid fabric sit best; make sure the hem clears the widest point of the hip.

Give the top volume, give the legs a line, raise the waist.

What to check in the fitting room

FITTING CHECK1. Reach both arms forward: no strain across the back, and the cuff still covers the wrist bone.
2. Fasten the top button: the chest lies flat with no X-shaped pull.
3. Sit down: the hem does not ride up over the seat.
4. Turn sideways: the hem covers the seat but stops above mid-thigh.
5. Walk: the trouser hem meets the shoe with a single soft break.

FAQ

Can petite people wear an oversized blazer?

Yes. Choose length before shoulder width: look for an XS length around 70–71 cm, then add high-waist straight trousers and a top in the same colour so the leg line stays long.

Should I size up for an oversized look?

Usually not. The volume is built into the pattern; the dropped-shoulder dark grey blazer is already 6.5 cm wider across the shoulder than a standard cut in the same size. Sizing up mostly makes the body and sleeves too long.

Where should a dropped shoulder seam sit?

On the upper arm, by design. Judge the fit by the collar against your neck, a flat chest when buttoned, and no horizontal folds on the upper arm.

Can I wear sneakers with an oversized blazer?

Yes. Choose sneakers with some sole height and trousers that meet the shoe with a slight break, or go ankle-length with tapered trousers. Our tailored trousers guide covers length and shoes in detail.

Can I exchange a blazer bought online?

Online orders are refund-only. Return it unworn with tags within 7 days of delivery, then order the right size, or try it first at our eslite spectrum Songyan store.
